I made the yummiest red beans and rice the other night. It was chilly and windy and I was craving good stick to the ribs comfort food. This is an easy recipe that you can make while you clean the house or try and knock out a chapter or two (which was what I was doing as they simmered on my stove). I use dry beans because they’re pretty easy - you can soak overnight or do the quick soak method, I prefer the overnight soak. It takes a little longer but the results are worth it. This is very freezeable so you can eat some now, freeze, and heat-up on one of those nights when you’re hungry but just don’t feel like cooking.
1 bag dry beans
1 medium shallot
2 – 3 cloves garlic
2 ham hocks or 1 large smoked turkey butt or leg
1 tbs garlic powder
2 tbs Cajun spice
1 tbs onion powder
½ tbs pepper
½ tbs crushed red pepper

Best Chinese dumplings EVER! China House at Mission & 24th in SF. This is comfort food and if seedy & cheap are buzz words for Foodie goodness, this joint is in the mix. Salt and pepper shrimp is delectable…both tasty treats warm your pocket @ a buck per. I add the dumplings to chicken broth and throw in bok choy or Chinese broccoli with hot chili sauce…yummy…
